OSWEGO, NY, January 23, 2012 – The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History will hold its third National Nuclear Science Week (NNSW) from Monday, January 23, through Friday, January 27. Constellation Energy Nuclear Group’s (CENG) Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station (NMPNS) partners with several local educational institutions to meet the increasing need for talented new employees at the site, tying into the NNSW Monday focus area of education and Tuesday focus area of careers.
Most recently, CENG formed a partnership with Onondaga Community College (OCC) as part of the Nuclear Uniform Curriculum Program (NUCP), which was developed to ensure there is a robust pipeline of entry level non-licensed operators, radiation protection technicians and maintenance personnel for the nuclear industry.
CENG is involved with the NUCP as the primary partner for OCC’s Nuclear Engineering Technology Associate in Applied Science degree program through a grant of $100,000. This new program will provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to work as entry-level technicians upon graduation or further a career in the nuclear industry. NMPNS personnel will be working closely with OCC faculty and staff to assist in the development of core curriculum courses, with on-site course instruction and providing internship opportunities.
CENG also works with engineering programs at Syracuse University, Clarkson University and Rochester Institute of Technology through a variety of classroom activities, visits to the site and co-op opportunities for students.
Additionally, CENG recognizes the importance of educating local high school students about the nuclear energy industry. Throughout the 2011-2012 academic year, NMPNS employees visited selected groups of students at each of the nine Oswego County school districts to share insight on how safe, reliable nuclear power is generated and distributed, why the nuclear power industry needs new talent and career opportunities in nuclear power generation. NMPNS is also present as a sponsor of the Workforce Board of Oswego County’s Annual Youth Employment Summit, in order to answer questions and raise awareness of opportunities at the facility.
