The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) voluntary environmental management systems standard (ISO 14001) specifies requirements for an environmental management system to enable an organization to develop and implement a policy and objectives, which take into account legal requirements and other requirements to which the organization subscribes, and information about significant environmental aspects.
CENG has made environmental management a clear priority by voluntarily achieving ISO 14001 certification at Calvert Cliffs, Nine Mile Point and R.E. Ginna. This extra effort drives the company toward continuous improvement. Nine Mile Point was the first American nuclear power facility to be ISO 14001 certified and has maintained this certification since 1998. In December 2010, R.E. Ginna and Calvert Cliffs both received the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Certification.
VOLUNTARY PROTECTION PROGRAM
The Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) promotes effective worksite-based safety and health. Approval into this program is official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved excellence in occupational safety and health. In 2008, the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH), granted Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant its Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star Level certification. In 2009, Nine Mile Point and R.E. Ginna were each granted Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) VPP Star Level certification. Star certification is the highest safety designation given by OSHA and the federal government.
